Treatment Ages

Timing is everything

Saacks Orthodontics in Port Macquarie provides a full range of orthodontic treatments for children, adolescents/teens and adult patients. This includes the most up-to-date and modern orthodontic techniques from Australia and America.

Orthodontics Australia recommend an orthodontic assessment between the ages of 7 and 9, or earlier if you notice any issues. At this initial check-up, we can identify potential problems and, if needed, intervene early while the jaw and teeth are still developing.

Signs something’s not quite right:
  • Early or late loss of baby teeth
  • Difficulty chewing or biting
  • Breathing through the mouth
  • Thumb-sucking
  • Jaws that are too far forward or back
  • Biting the cheek
  • Protruding teeth
  • Upper and lower teeth that don’t meet

Early Treatment - Ages 7 to 11

What age should my child visit an orthodontist?

Age can impact a number of different issues within the mouth and we generally recommend that your child sees see an orthodontist as early as possible. Seeing an orthodontist does not mean treatment will start immediately. Getting a professional opinion early, however, ensures treatment will commence at the optimal age. Some early intervention may be carried out by your orthodontist to minimise future problems.

This is what the Australian Society of Orthodontists say about early orthodontic treatment on their website: “Orthodontic problems are usually apparent by the age of 7 when most of the adult front teeth have erupted.”

Early examination allows the orthodontist to detect and evaluate problems and to plan an appropriate treatment schedule.

Early treatment may prevent more serious problems from developing, or make treatment at a later age shorter and less complicated. Early treatment may also achieve results that are not possible once the face and jaws have stopped growing.

In most cases, orthodontic treatment is commenced as soon as the last baby tooth has been shed. This usually occurs in the early teens. In some cases, it is an advantage to start just before the last baby teeth are shed.

Adolescent Treatment - Ages 12 to 18

Braces for teens

The teen years are the perfect time for a Specialist Orthodontist to treat any problems with the alignment of teeth and jaws.

Between the ages of 12 and 18 is the ideal time for treatment because, by age 12, all adult teeth should have come through and be in place. Once all teeth are in place, any problems such as gaps, crooked teeth or a bad bite can be detected.

Since these problems rarely correct themselves, between 12 and 18 is the time the majority of patients undergo orthodontic treatment.

Why you want straighter teeth at a younger age

Straighter teeth look better and are easier to clean. And teeth which are cleaned properly and regularly tend to last longer.  Straightening teeth at a younger age can also result in faster treatment time because the jaws are still developing and are more mouldable.
